Antimicrobial Stewardship

Antibiotic stewardship refers to the effort to measure and improve how antibiotics are prescribed by clinicians and used by patients. For clinicians, that means prescribing the right drug, at the right dose, at the right time, and for the right duration. For patients, that means the right person taking the drug exactly as prescribed for the right length of time. Improving the way healthcare professionals prescribe antibiotics, and the way we take antibiotics, helps keep us healthy, helps fight antibiotic resistance, and ensures that life-saving antibiotics will be available for future generations.

ASPs can be implemented in any healthcare setting; how they are implemented will vary based on the type of setting, types of patients, and available resources and expertise.

The CDC has compiled evidence to support Antibiotic Stewardship Programs (ASPs).  This evidence highlights the impact of ASPs on costs, reduction of Clostridioides difficile infections, antibiotic use, and more.
