Ohio Council to Advance Maternal Health (OH-CAMH)


The Ohio Council to Advance Maternal Health (OH-CAMH) was established in the spring of 2020 to convene stakeholders working on maternal health issues. Over 70 stakeholders were invited to work together as a state to learn from one another, synergize efforts, and identify and implement solutions. Some goals of OH-CAMH include:

  • Identify and catalog maternal health activities happening across Ohio
  • Find synergies and gaps in activities
  • Create and implement a state strategic plan to improve maternal health in Ohio
  • Improve data to action as it relates to maternal health

What is the difference between OH-CAMH and PAMR?

PAMR -The Pregnancy-Associated Mortality Review (PAMR) is the enhanced surveillance program.

  • This group consists of 2 arms: ODH PAMR staff and a multidisciplinary committee. The multidisciplinary committee (~40 members) reviews maternal mortality cases to determine preventability and provide recommendations to prevent future deaths.
  • PAMR has been reviewing cases since 2010.
  • The focus of PAMR is surveillance.

OH-CAMH - Ohio Council to Advance Maternal Health (OH-CAMH) is the newly formed state-focused maternal health task force.

  • This group will use data from PAMR to develop and implement a statewide, maternal health strategic plan.
  • This is a larger group (~80 organizations) compared to PAMR, focused on broadly addressing maternal health in Ohio.
  • The focus of OH-CAMH will be implementation.

Ohio Maternal Health Infrastructure

  • Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM) moves established guidelines into practice with a standard approach to improve safety in maternity care. Co-led by the Ohio Hospital Association and Ohio Department of Health.
  • Ohio Council to Advance Maternal Health (OH-CAMH) is a statewide membership organization that aims to develop and implement a statewide strategic plan to uplift patients and families through a lens of equity to create a better environment for maternal health in Ohio.
  • The ODH Pregnancy-Associated Mortality Review program is a Maternal Mortality Review Committee (MMRC) that conducts detailed reviews to get complete and comprehensive data on maternal deaths to prioritize prevention efforts.
  • Quality Improvement Expertise from entities such as OSU Colleges of Medicine Government Resources Center (GRC), the Ohio Perinatal Quality Collaborative (OPQC), and other experts can assist state partners in mobilizing state of multi-state networks to implement quality improvement efforts and improve care for mothers and babies.
