X-ray Equipment
X-ray Registration and Inspection
The X-ray Equipment program has approximately 36,000 X-ray tubes registered. The majority of registered radiation-generating equipment consists of dental, radiographic, fluoroscopic, therapeutic, computerized tomography, mammography, veterinary and various types of non-medical units used for industrial applications.
X-ray Equipment Inspection is responsible for inspecting facilities that use x-ray equipment and businesses that install x-ray equipment in Ohio. Health physics inspectors travel throughout Ohio performing inspections on approximately 7,300 x-ray machines at 3,300 facilities annually.
X-ray Equipment Registration registers, maintains records and tracks radiation-generating equipment in Ohio. Handlers of radiation-generating equipment are required to be registered with the Ohio Department of Health. A handler means a facility that receives, possesses, uses, stores, transfers, installs, services or disposes of sources of radiation, unless possession is solely for the purpose of transportation.
Possession of x-ray equipment, even if in storage or rendered inoperable, requires a valid registration.
The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) Bureau of Environmental Health and Radiation Protection, Radiation Protection Program, has the important mission to protect and promote the physical and environmental health of the people of Ohio. ODH strives to prevent unnecessary radiation exposure to the public through effective licensing, registration, inspection, enforcement, and emergency response.
The ODH X-ray Registration Program issues certificates of registration for businesses that utilize x-ray machines for medical and academic, dental, veterinary, and industrial uses and to x-ray service companies.
X-ray services include but not limited to assemble, install, repair, dispose, demonstrate, sales and provide x-ray machine rentals.
