Many important public health indicators are derived from birth certificates. The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) receives birth certificates for all births occurring in the state and also for births to Ohio residents which occurred outside the state. These reports are combined into annual statistical data files which are used to calculate the statistics contained in this section of the ODH website. A variety of measures that relate to maternal and infant characteristics are included. These are generally presented as percentages. Fertility rates and crude birth rates relate the number of births in an area to the number of persons residing in that area.
