2022 Data:
5,565 Total asthma Hospitalizations and 41,995 Total asthma ED Visits.
Adult:
- 1,481,909 adult Ohioans have been told at some time in their lives that they had asthma.
- 16.09% of adults – lifetime asthma.
- 1,042,354 adult Ohioans currently have asthma.
- 11.39% of adults – current asthma.
- 15.05% of adult females currently have asthma. 7.51% of adult males currently have asthma.
- 16.25% of Black, Non-Hispanic adults currently have asthma. 10.47% of White, Non-Hispanic adults currently have asthma.
- 18.81% of adults with an annual household income of less than $25,000 currently have asthma.
- Asthma is most prevalent in adults with an annual household income of less than $25,000.
- Current asthma prevalence:
- 13.19% for adults with annual household income of $25,000-$49,999.
- 9.78% for adults with annual household income of $50,000-$99,999.
- 8.42% for adults with annual household income of $100,000 or more.
- Male adults experienced an asthma hospitalization rate of 1.54 visits per 10,000 adult male residents. Female adults experienced an asthma hospitalization rate of 3.57 visits per 10,000 adult female residents.
Child:
- 234,103 children in Ohio have been told at some time in their lives that they had asthma.
- 9.73% of children – lifetime asthma.
- 163,828 children in Ohio currently have asthma.

- Asthma is most prevalent in children with an annual household income of less than $25,000.
- Current asthma prevalence:
- 8.46% for children with an annual household income of $25,000-$49,999.
- 6.24% for children with an annual household income of $50,000-$99,999.
- 4.41% for children with an annual household income of $100,000 or more.
- Male children experienced an asthma hospitalization rate of 14.22 visits per 10,000 male child residents. Female children experienced an asthma hospitalization rate of 10.63 visits per 10,000 female child residents.
- Current Asthma: Defined as having been diagnosed with asthma by a doctor and currently having asthma.
- Lifetime Asthma: Defined as having ever been diagnosed with asthma by a doctor at any point in the individual’s lifetime, regardless of current status.

Mortality:
- From 2013-2022, an average of 132 Ohio citizens per year died from asthma.
- From 2013-2022 female Ohioans experienced an average asthma mortality rate of 13.80 asthma deaths per 1 million female residents, compared to male Ohioans who experienced an average asthma mortality rate of 8.70 asthma deaths per 1,000,000 male residents.
- From 2013-2022, White, Non-Hispanic children in Ohio experienced an average asthma mortality rate of 1.56 asthma deaths per 1 million child residents whereas Black, Non-Hispanic children experienced an average asthma mortality rate of 10.97 asthma deaths per 1 million child residents.
- From 2013-2022, White, Non-Hispanic adults in Ohio experienced an average asthma mortality rate of 12.09 asthma deaths per 1 million adult residents compared to Black, Non-Hispanic adults who experienced an average asthma mortality rate of 30.30 asthma deaths per 1 million adult residents.
- Ohio women and Non-Hispanic Black residents are more likely to die from asthma.
Work/School Asthma data:
- In 2021, approximately 30.28% of adults diagnosed with current asthma, missed work due to their asthma in the past 12 months.
- Between 2019-2021, approximately 28.43% of children diagnosed with current asthma, missed school due to their asthma in the past 12 months.

Ohio Surveillance System for Asthma (OSSA)
Asthma surveillance is the ongoing collection, analysis, and interpretation of asthma-related data. The Ohio Surveillance System for Asthma (OSSA) is a repository of Ohio asthma data resources established by the Ohio Department of Health to inform its programs and serve as a resource for others.
